SAN FRANCISCO FBI OFFICE ESTABLISHES A PUBLIC CORRUPTION HOTLINE

1-800-376-5991

Mark J. Mershon, Special Agent in Charge of the San Francisco Office of the FBI, announces the establishment of a Bay Area Public Corruption Hotline at 1-800-376-5991. This Hotline is exclusive to the San Francisco Bay Area and was established for the purpose of encouraging citizens to call the FBI and report information regarding public corruption activities they believe may have occurred. The Hotline was established to enable and encourage individuals with knowledge of corrupt public officials to report their information.

Corruption allegations are among the most sensitive matters addressed by the FBI. Using a variety of Federal statutes, the FBI investigates allegations of public corruption in all branches of the government at all levels, to include federal, state, and local. Over 50 percent of pending FBI public corruption cases target state and local corruption. The FBI’s interest is in federal, state, and local officials who may be involved in embezzlement, extortion, illegal campaign financing, the misuse of their official position, and in the solicitation of bribes or kickbacks.

SAC Mershon said, "Public corruption schemes are difficult to detect. They are secretive, often sophisticated, and generally lack visible clues to the public. These crimes most often involve coercion and conspiracies of mutually benefiting parties."

Public corruption hurts honest citizens who expect fair value from government services. It results in the waste or theft of substantial public funds. Most importantly, it erodes our confidence in government by casting a cloud of distrust over the large majority of public officials who are honest. It is often a call from a concerned citizen or unwilling participant that brings corrupt public officials to justice.

If citizens are aware of criminal activity involving public corruption, they should call the FBI Bay Area Public Corruption Hotline at 1-800-376-5991. The FBI follows strict policies to ensure the confidentiality of the information provided to the automated Public Corruption Hotline.

Media inquiries should be addressed to Special Agent LaRae Quy, FBI, San Francisco at 415-553-7450
